I can't help but think a person with this "disposable pet" mentality will get settled in to his new house and, without a trace of guilt will replace his "throw-away" cat with a cute new kitten. Maybe, if it is lucky, this new kitten will never become an inconvenience. Good for you for offering him help even though he didn't want it. That's what makes your organization different from others who might have taken his cat and killed it, or brushed him off with a "'We're full!"
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1377908862484587240.post-52531478500048782752015-03-09T14:14:24.262-07:002015-03-09T14:14:24.262-07:00Well said!Well said!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1377908862484587240.post-63392111261686034612013-02-06T22:05:11.954-08:002013-02-06T22:05:11.954-08:00Amusing ... but also profound. I feel when you look at % of Kill numbe...Good blog.
I feel when you look at % of Kill numbers, the only numbers you look at to come out with a true % is Kill versus Adopted.
The other animals they "handled" were either DOA, owner euthanize requests, owner returns, they were never animals they had to make a decision to kill or adopt out, that's smoke and mirrors when they try to bring all those numbers in as part of the Kill/Adopted ratio.
And don't forget those 981-6000+ out in the atmosphere un-accounted for, those may still need to go to the Kill side as we all know they were not adopted.
So if it is 1867 Killed and we know the majority of these animals were treatable, and adoptable be they puppies or kittens needing help to survive, an animal with some behavior issues or just plain scared or a senior pet killed, well because it's "old", only a small % were truly dangerous or suffering and needed to be euthanized. So, only 1319 Adopted, that is well over 60% killed and then you add those out there floating around on paperwork, the number may be far higher.
They are mass killing animals, spin it anyway you want but just be honest, you are killing out of laziness, spite, lack of compassion and because you can.
No one in larger numbers only a few not afraid to speak up have kept the spotlight on this locally and No Kill Nation who is Nation wide also call out this deception and killing. The public is starting to catch wind of this.
And it's about time they listened to more then the over paid Shelter Directors in this State.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1377908862484587240.post-43753393972393916022013-02-05T12:15:33.397-08:002013-02-05T12:15:33.397-08:00Great information. Maybe CBHS should do some research on how other shelters have successfully found ways to adopt feral cats or neuter them and return them to their "stomping grounds." And it sounds like they at least need a bookkeeper who can make the numbers come up right!

My local animal shelter in Western North Carolina is close to being a no-kill shelter and our county is close to becoming a no-kill county -- it takes effort and imagination, but it can be done. As for "feral" cats, they are automatically killed at CBHS. There is no chance for them even considered. How do I know that? My neighborhood had a feral cat problem and the person picking them up had no problem telling me and a neighbor that they would automatically put down due to diseases. No evaluation for diseases is done if they are put down right away.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1377908862484587240.post-90095499884131098942013-02-04T21:24:48.551-08:002013-02-04T21:24:48.551-08:00Outstanding article, well researched and written. ...Outstanding article, well researched and written. I have enough trouble when one of my dogs decides only a beanie will do -- and I have a small collection of "one-eyed wonders" that I rescued from my critters before they were de-stuffed! I totally understand both the original donor's desire that her collection be sold in its entirety as a collection to a collector and think you made the right call, Linda. The child probably could care less what toy she put in her (his?) mouth -- and beanies, I believe, are not the best toy for children under three!

I also believe you did a wonderful thing for the elderly woman -- not making her cry, but bringing her so much joy that she did cry. And she also understood the point of it all. We do stuff, we make stuff, we sell stuff, we hold garage sales and give things away and give our time and effort to help others, whether it's animals or children or battered women or the homeless.

Nicky and I have been on both sides -- at craft fairs where we sold our polymer clay animals, etc., we have seen people's reactions when we really gave them a deal because they like something so much. As buyers at fairs and conventions, we have sometimes had people give us things at a price way below what they could have gotten for it because something told them we were the right people to have it. And we have tried to live up to that as well.

Sometimes, when you meet too many of the first type of customer you described, it's easy to give up on people in general. Then you come across someone like the elderly woman and you understand why it is all worthwhile.

Bless you and you work on behalf of Raccoon Valley Animal Sanctuary and the animals it helps.Jackiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18010224175322024282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1377908862484587240.post-69997265448393655522012-09-09T12:13:02.963-07:002012-09-09T12:13:02.963-07:00Wow! To give after a life of sufferage is just beyond anything and a very good example that more younger people need to pay attention too. They dont realize what they can learn from older person, it can make you a better person, maybe a bit more compassionate. Shame that young girl wasnt there to see and here this older woman, she might have learned something.
